I really believe that Paul is actually saying that it is the carnal mind that was bugging him. He is the only one in the Bible to go into so much detail about the carnal mind.

If you consider the body to be the temple of God, even though you have a born again spirit living in that body, the presence of the carnal mind with its lies, continues to pollute the temple, whether you obey them or not.

Jesus crucified his.

The Father will burn ours up with His consuming fire... when He comes as Elijah.  That is how we will be glorified by His grace, and I believe, that is what Paul wanted; ie knowing that he needed to be rid of that carnal mind construct before he could be glorified.  He saw Jesus in His glorified state... and Paul had visions/experiences in heaven(s).  so.. he was right there.. and wanted to take the last step.

anyways.. thats my take on it, at this time. we, you and I, are not far apart on what really matters!  Praise God!
